From 1794 to 1834, the United States Mint issued its gold circulation coins with a 22-karat “crown gold” alloy. In 1834, the gold content of American coins was lowered to 89.92% following a change in the legal valuation of gold-to-silver from 15:1 to 16:1. This change lasted only three years.
In 1837, the United States again changed gold content with the amount of gold per coin changed to 90% purity with a balance of 10% copper. This continued through 1933 when gold coining in the United States ended permanently. The US Mint wouldn’t issue gold coins again until it launched the bullion Gold Eagle in 1986 with 22-karat gold consisting of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
Obverse designs on these 2024 1/4 oz Gold Eagles feature an iconic portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907, this image shows the full-length figure of Liberty in front-facing relief with the U.S. Capitol Building at her feet in the background, rays of sunshine on the horizon, and a ring of stars around the field.
Reverse visuals on the 2024 American Gold Eagle include a modernized image of the American bald eagle. Created in 2020, this design from Jennie Norris captures the head of the bald eagle in left-profile relief with intricate details for the physical features of the eagle.
These 2024 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are packaged individually in protective flips or by multiples of 40 coins in plastic tubes.
